One of the greatest pleasures of travelling is finding the most breathtaking spots to witness the beauty of a sunset, each offering its unique charm.

As the light wanes and the sky shifts colors, the world around us takes on a new form. Sunsets have the power to lift our mood because they remind us that even the hardest days can end on a high note, with a stunning gift from the sky.

1. Most Stunning: Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

The salt flats of Uyuni bathe in the pink glow of the setting sun, turning the landscape into something surreal. As the sun descended, its light highlighted the edges of the salt formations, creating a magical atmosphere that shifted from golden to pink. It’s an unforgettable sight, one that stands out as perhaps the most beautiful sunset I’ve witnessed. I hope to return during the wet season when the flats transform into a giant mirror, reflecting the sky in its entirety.

2. Most Famous Sunset: Santorini, Greece

When I got married, Santorini was my dream honeymoon destination. The idea of staying on the rim of a volcanic caldera captivated me. Though we couldn’t afford it at the time, a brief visit during a trip to the Cyclades fulfilled that dream. Despite the crowds and heat, the views were spectacular. Later, we explored the area by moonlight, a surreal experience that made shadows cast by the full moon all the more eerie and mesmerizing.

For the perfect sunset, choose accommodations with a westward view, especially if the horizon features the ocean. On the west coast of Mauritius, the sunsets over the calm coral lagoons were nothing short of spectacular. One evening, I captured a moment where a fishing boat sailed past, adding to the beauty of the already perfect scene.

By day, the Maldives is a vibrant canvas of turquoise waters and white sands. While the Maldives is an expensive destination, it’s worth the splurge for the once-in-a-lifetime paradise experience.

9. Most Dreamy Sunset: Venice, Italy

Venice, a city built in a lagoon, offers a stunning backdrop for a sunset. I had the pleasure of staying on the Grand Canal, and one evening, waiting for a boat to take me to St. Mark’s, I couldn't help but imagine living in a grand palazzo, with my own boat gliding through the canals. The sunset over the city’s ornate buildings was truly special.

10. Best Mountain Sunset: Montenegro

Kotor Bay, surrounded by steep mountains, is a remarkable location for sunset views. The hike up to the viewpoint above Kotor town was exhausting but rewarding, especially when the setting sun bathed the bay in warm light. It was a stunning, peaceful moment to reflect on the beauty of the surroundings.
